Not an accurate analogy: I love Rihanna, not her music but her philanthropy and how she works to make a better place for people of colour. She’s great, just like Serena. She’s inspirational, just like Serena. But she’s light-skinned and hasn’t received the torrent of shitty comments like Serena. Since Serena Williams has a darker complexion, she will be perceived in a defiant / arrogant way, her words and actions are scrutinised to the point of antagonism and disdain. That has a name, it’s misogynoir and this colourist discrimination didn’t start with Black men but has been heightened and legitimised by them.
